Around 70% doubt the veteran politician’s mental capacity to hold another presidential term.
According to a recent survey, most Americans believe that President Joe Biden should abandon his bid for the presidency due to concerns regarding his mental ability to serve an additional term.
According to a survey conducted by the AP-NORC Public Affairs Research Center, over 70% of respondents across the nation believe that Biden should withdraw from running for re-election and allow another Democratic candidate to be nominated. Even within the Democratic party itself, this sentiment is shared by about 65%, which marks a noticeable rise since February when only around one-third held this view.
In general, around 70% of the American population lacks confidence in Biden’s mental ability to effectively hold presidential office.
Throughout his presidential campaign, the 81-year-old politician has been under public scrutiny due to cognitive and physical decline. However, after struggling in a CNN-hosted debate with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump last month — losing track of thoughts, confusing words and numbers while also experiencing difficulty finishing sentences– concerns took on heightened concern regarding Biden’s capabilities. Within the Democratic Party there was dissent among high-ranking members as well as donors pushing for him drop reelection plans.’
Disregarding the concerns raised by his opponents, the current president attributed his lackluster performance in the debate to fatigue and illness. Despite repeated suggestions that he should withdraw from the race altogether, he remains steadfast in his determination not to give up unless advised so by a medical professional or if some divine intervention persuades him otherwise. Furthermore, he maintains unwavering confidence in being able to defeat Trump at this election.
According to the survey, Americans have little faith in both Biden and Trump’s mental capacity as potential leaders. However, they are more likely to favor Trump over Biden.
In contrast to Biden’s 14%, a higher percentage of respondents, specifically 30%, expressed their confidence in Trump’s capabilities to perform the job. The pollster also reported that participants considered Trump more likely to succeed in the upcoming election and deemed him capable of managing an emergency situation.
1,253 American adults were surveyed in a poll conducted from July 11 to July 15.
