A peace agreement was negotiated by Kogi State’s political parties and stakeholders with less than 72 hours till the governorship election to guarantee a free and fair poll.
On Wednesday, the Kukah Centre, with funding from the European Union, hosted a ceremony in Lokoja to sign the peace agreement.
It is not a “do or die” election, according to Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, who was represented by Attah Barkindo. He urged politicians to make sure their behaviour during the election process is conducive to a smooth one.

Bishop Kukah told the Kogi State people that violence should never be encouraged during elections and expressed gratitude for their tenacity and faith in democracy.
He said, “Democracy is preferable to dictatorship, no matter what.” The political parties represented below are all ones that I would want to thank. We were worried that no one would follow through on this peace deal.
“People are depressed and have lost faith in society, which is the reason.” The country is full of hopelessness. Institutions are distrusted by the public. For this worthy cause, you have shown up and supported us.
“For all the support and collaboration we have received over the years, we are incredibly appreciative to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies.”
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barrister Didat Ozigi, spoke on behalf of Kogi State Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, who praised the Kukah Centre for its humanitarian work.
Asserting that the platform will aid the state in upholding peace and combating insecurity, Governor Bello stated that his administration is concerned about the security of all Kogi State residents.
Before, during, and after the election, Governor Bello urged the people of Kogi to make sure they follow the law and behave themselves in a peaceful manner.
In Kogi State, he also cautioned other political parties to make sure the election is peaceful.
