Police: Woman arrested for tossing her 5-month-old baby into the river

The Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that its agents had detained Olubunmi Ajayi, 30, on Sunday for trying to drown her five-month-old child, Imole Anifowose, in the RSS River in Sagamu.

The infant was thrown into the water by her mother, and it was reported that one Olusola Sonaya, who was near the river, helped to save her.

This was said in a statement provided the media on Monday by SP Omolola Odutola, the state police command’s spokeswoman.

According to reports, the infant was sent urgently to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu to receive medical care.

At the time this story was filed, her condition was said to be stable.

The statement said, in part, “One Olusola Sonaya “m” of RSS River Sagamu prevented her mother from purposefully drowning her five-month-old infant, Imole Anifowose, who is now in stable condition.

“After an attempted murder case on January 21, 2024, at around 1730 hours, a humanitarian spotted 30-year-old Oluwabunmi Ajayi “f”; she was seen putting her small child into the river by the suspect.

“The individual who witnessed her throwing the child into the river hurried over to save the infant from drowning.

The infant was sent to OOUTH right away for emergency care and testing, and it was discovered that he had survived the ordeal.

“The mother has been taken into custody and is being monitored to determine her mental state. To ensure the baby’s proper wellbeing while in the hospital, attempts have been made to get in touch with family members or the husband.
