On Tuesday, July 16th, the Kenyan police employed tear gas to disperse demonstrations seeking to sustain their efforts in urging President William Ruto’s resignation. These protests persist despite Ruto implementing various modifications.
Protests demanding a nationwide “shutdown” on Tuesday, led by activists enraged over the proposed tax hikes, have posed significant challenges to Ruto’s two-year presidency. Despite Ruto rescinding $2.7 billion in tax increases and replacing most of his cabinet, these demonstrations remain ongoing albeit with fewer attendees.
Amid accusations of poor governance, corruption and responsibility for the deaths of previous protesters during rallies, a demand has arisen from demonstrators calling for Ruto’s resignation. In response to around 200 protestors chanting anti-Ruto slogans whilst setting tires alight in Kitengela near Nairobi on Tuesday, police used tear gas. Similar displays happening concurrently in both Nairobi’s city center as well as Mombasa met with like tactics by authorities using tear gas against protesting individuals.
Despite Ruto’s announcement of talks to address the concerns of protesters, discussions have yet to begin. Activists are declining participation and insisting on prompt action to combat corruption as well as other matters.
There was no comment from Ruto’s spokesperson regarding the situation.
With over 30% of its revenue being allocated towards interest payments, Kenya finds itself grappling with a debt crisis. Ruto is under immense pressure from creditors to reduce deficits while simultaneously addressing the suffering experienced by his constituents as they grapple with exorbitant living costs. Despite starting out peacefully, protests have taken an increasingly violent turn and rights groups report that more than forty individuals have lost their lives as a result.
Without any evidence, Ruto accused the Ford Foundation of financing the demonstrations on Monday. The foundation defended itself by denying these allegations and reaffirming its commitment to a non-partisan stance, stating that it does not fund protests.
