Police Update: Anambra Stampede Death Toll Rises to 22
Police in Anambra provide an update on the tragic stampede, confirming that the death toll has now reached 22, following an incident during a public event.
A tragic stampede occurred during the distribution of palliatives in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of 22 people, as confirmed by the state police command.
The incident took place on Saturday during an event organized by a local philanthropist to distribute relief materials to residents.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga announced in a statement released on Sunday that Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam visited the hospital where injured victims are being treated.
“The Commissioner expressed sympathy for the families and friends of those who lost their lives, and extended wishes for a swift recovery to the injured,” Ikenga stated.
He also mentioned that investigations into the cause of the stampede are still in progress, highlighting the command’s dedication to maintaining public safety throughout the festive season.
