Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has been questioned by the police regarding a viral extortion video, as investigations into the incident continue.

On Monday, rights activist Omoyele Sowore was questioned at the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja regarding a recent viral video he posted about alleged extortion by some police officers.

In the video, Sowore claimed that the officers were involved in illegal activities along Murtala Muhammed Airport Road in Lagos State.

In the video, Sowore engaged in a dispute with several police officers who stopped the car he was traveling in on its way to Lagos airport and instructed the driver to pull over.

The viral video prompted numerous reactions, leading the police to invite him for additional questioning.

Sowore arrived at the Force Intelligence Bureau accompanied by his lawyers and a handful of supporters who sang songs of solidarity.

Monday’s visit was not Sowore’s first interaction with the police and other security agencies. In September 2024, the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate for the 2023 presidential election was “briefly detained” at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos due to his alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests that shook the nation in August.

In February 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed treasonable felony charges against the #RevolutionNow protest organizer. This decision followed a notice of discontinuance filed by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi on behalf of the Federal Government.
