Police Operative Shot, Two Vehicles Burned in Anambra Checkpoint Attack by Gunmen

Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Anambra, leaving one operative injured and two vehicles set ablaze. Authorities are investigating the violent incident. Read more.

Armed assailants have targeted a police checkpoint in Ajali, located within the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

In a statement released on Friday, Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed this information.

Ikenga, a Superintendent of Police, reported that two security operatives were injured by gunfire during an exchange and are currently undergoing medical treatment.

A police Hilux was set ablaze following an attack by gunmen at a checkpoint in Ajali, within the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He recognized the victims as law enforcement officers and a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group.

He stated, “In the gun duel, a police officer and an AVG Operative were injured by gunfire and are currently recovering in a hospital.”

Regrettably, both operational vehicles owned by the AVG were engulfed in flames and completely destroyed.

In the aftermath of an attack on a police checkpoint by gunmen at Ajali in Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, a Sienna vehicle was also set ablaze.

The report states that the gunmen were stopped on Thursday along the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road.

They recovered a branded blue Hilux vehicle, which is suspected to have been taken from an unsuspecting member of the public.

The police spokesperson noted, “While searching the vehicle, coolers used for preserving food were discovered. The armed men had been pursued after police operatives repelled an attack on a checkpoint at Ajali in Orumba North Local Government Area.”

He mentioned that joint operations are continuing in the area and any further developments will be shared.

Anambra is among the South-Eastern states experiencing a series of attacks by gunmen believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The additional states are Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi.

In spite of the security forces’ presence, gunmen persist in launching attacks and imposing a sit-at-home order on Mondays, causing the region to lose billions of naira.

However, it remains uncertain whether IPOB/ESN was responsible for the most recent attack in Anambra.
