Three extortionate police officers in Lagos State have been detained, along with their counterparts from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who were working along with thugs.

They were detained with their affiliated 14 thugs between Friday and Saturday in the Mile 2 region of the state, according to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police spokesman, who made the announcement on Saturday in Ikeja.

According to Hundeyin, the arrests were made as part of an operation under the direction of Mr Fatai Tijani, the state’s deputy commissioner of police (Operations).

He continued by saying that Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, established a taskforce that carried out the operation in response to reports of thugs and certain uncooperative law enforcement personnel continuously extorting motorists.

“CP Idowu Owohunwa established an enforcement unit with the mission of raiding locations that have been designated as known for such nefarious operations in an effort to stop the growing incidences of extortion on the highways.

“The enforcement squad, which started conducting raids on Friday, is made up of tactical teams and provost officers from the state headquarters. It is led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).

The crew was in the Mile 2 region of the state, which Hundeyin described as a hotspot for blatant extortions.

He cited Owohunwa’s warning that anyone working for a law enforcement agency who was discovered to be involved in an extortion scheme would be detained and dealt with legally.

The CP assures drivers that the enforcement team will continue the raids and conduct similar operations in other regions of the state until complete sanity has been restored. As well, Hundeyin said.
