On Saturday, suspected Boko Haram insurgents ambushed Yobe state Governor Mai Mala Buni’s security guards, killing one police officer and wounding six more.
In Borno State, the attack happened near the Jakana-Mainok motorway.
The governor was allegedly escorted by the security squad to Maiduguri for the University of Maiduguri’s 24th Convocation event, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima received an honorary doctorate.
Buni was rumoured to have stayed behind in Maiduguri before travelling to Abuja for another important engagement, while the team headed back to Yobe.
Mamman Mohammed, the governor’s spokesperson, confirmed the attack and stated that the security personnel raced into the ambush.
“The security guards escorting the governor’s official vehicles back to Damaturu exchanged fire with them after they fired some shots, but three policemen were injured,” he claimed.

He stated that the attack was repelled by the security personnel and that the injured were responding to medical attention.
The “troops leading the convoy with MRAP, a Gun Truck, and another vehicle conveying the Police and DSS were targeted,” a security source from the convoy said our correspondent.
As a result, the terrorists were forced to retreat by the army’ strong fire response. Regretfully, a single law enforcement officer had to pay the ultimate price, while two soldiers—a driver among them—three police officers, and a DSS sustained injuries.
The source stated, “The injured individuals and the driver were evacuated to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, but some of the wounded are in critical condition. The security operatives returned safely to Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state.”
As of the time of publication, there was no confirmation of the terrorists’ death toll.
