An Enugu-based police officer has been taken into custody following allegations of killing a local musician. Authorities are investigating the incident as the community seeks justice. Learn more about the unfolding case.
Authorities in Enugu State have arrested a police officer accused of killing musician Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah.
It was reported that Mba was fatally shot by a police inspector on Friday at the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.
The incident sparked protests, with hundreds of residents marching to the anti-cult headquarters and trying to set it on fire.
Concerned about the incident, State Governor Peter Mbah initiated an investigation into the musician’s killing.
In a statement on Saturday, Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, disclosed the identity of the overly aggressive officer.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Nduke identified the police inspector as Joseph Ozonwanji.
“He is presently in custody and will face the full extent of the law once the investigation concludes,” he stated.
The spokesman for the Command also included a photograph of the inspector in a detention facility.
He mentioned that the state Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, along with officials from the Enugu State Government, later visited the musician’s family.
According to the statement, the CP expressed condolences to both the family and friends of the deceased musician.
He assured the residents of Enugu State that the ongoing investigation into the case would be wrapped up quickly and justice would be served appropriately.
Uzegbu stressed that the Police Force is a disciplined organization where officers who engage in misconduct are typically held accountable and penalized.
The Enugu police chief urged Nigerians to trust the Nigerian police in delivering justice for the matter.
