A police officer fired and one other person was arrested for allegedly robbing the POS operator

In Enugu State, two people—among them a former police officer—have reportedly been burned alive for robbing a Point of Sale (POS) operator.

The incident took place on Wednesday in the state’s Enugu North Local Government Area along Bissalla Road in Independence Layout.

After robbing the POS operator and attempting to leave on their tricycle, the suspects, who were said to be operating it, were reportedly apprehended by an enraged crowd.

Before the most recent incident, a witness who wished to remain anonymous claimed that the suspects had been terrorizing POS operators in the neighbourhood.

Following the heist, other young people tried to catch up with them, but their trike was struck by an oncoming car, forcing it to suddenly come to a stop.
The source reported, “The teenagers then captured them and lit them ablaze.”

The two victims may have been working as police officers at the New Haven Police Divisional Headquarters, according to accounts that surfaced immediately after.

Ahmed Ammani, the commissioner of police in Enugu State, has denied the claims.

One of the suspects was a former police officer, according to records, Mr Ammani claimed in a statement released on Thursday by the state’s police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe.

In light of this, he “can never be seen or said to be a serving cop as claimed,” the guy added.

Mr Ammani has denounced the mob action against the accused in the meantime.

He declared that the incident is the subject of a police inquiry.

Residents were advised by the police commissioner to refrain from using “self-help to carry out acts of jungle justice,” as doing so was “completely condemnable and equal to the conduct of crime in itself.”

He asked citizens of the state to uphold the law at all times and help the police battle crime by apprehending and turning over suspects to the authorities.
