Law enforcement officers in Kebbi State have killed a suspected bandit and arrested two others during a recent operation aimed at curbing criminal activities in the region.
In an effort to suppress banditry in the state, the Kebbi State Police Command has verified that one alleged bandit was assassinated and two others were detained during an operation.
During the operation, three AK-47 rifles and ammunition were recovered as reported by Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson for the command in a statement released on Friday.
On June 21, 2024, Kurgeye village in the Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area was attacked by a group of armed bandits on motorcycles. Abubakar reported that during this incident, two people were abducted: Malami Danladi and his son Bello Danladi.
According to him, a group of 36 Police Mobile Force (PMF) members who were on special duty teamed up with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and acted promptly by responding to the report. They engaged in pursuit which resulted in an exchange of gunfire between them and the bandits.
While facing the situation, a bandit was fatally shot and authorities retrieved one AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a Bajaj motorcycle.
On September 3, 2024, security operatives teamed up with vigilantes to conduct a patrol along the Ribah-Kanya Road. As a result of this operation, two individuals namely Isiya Alhaji Usman and Yunusa Yusuf were apprehended on suspicion of having ties to the bandits causing chaos in that region.
During the search, a K2 rifle along with a counterfeit AK-47 was discovered alongside three magazines and 66 live ammunition rounds.
The officers were commended by Kebbi State’s Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, who urged them to sustain and improve their commendable efforts.
Furthermore, he urged for enhanced cooperation among security agencies to combat banditry and promote stability within the area.
The State Criminal Investigation Department has taken custody of the suspects and recovered items for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
