The Schools Protection Squad (SPS) was officially launched in Kano State by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), with a total of 60 members inaugurated by the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, at the police command headquarters in Kano.
This squad has been established with the primary objective of safeguarding schools, educational institutions, students, pupils, teachers, and their facilities from potential threats posed by kidnappers and armed bandits.
Commissioner Gumel highlighted that the SPS initiative was put forth by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Ebegtokun, to ensure a secure learning environment and provide comprehensive protection for students, teachers, schools, and their critical infrastructures.
The 60 police personnel forming the SPS have undergone thorough training and have been equipped with the necessary tools and kits to carry out their duties effectively.

Starting from Thursday, May 2, 2024, these officers will be deployed to conduct extensive patrols around primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary institutions vulnerable to security threats, across all senatorial districts within the state.
The police commissioner emphasized that the squad received training in school policing tactics in Abuja and has been furnished with operational vehicles and advanced tracking devices to prevent potential invasions and attacks by terrorist groups.
While acknowledging that the current 60-member squad may not be adequate to cover all schools in the 44 local government areas and the metropolitan city of Kano, Commissioner Gumel assured that additional squads will be established to ensure sufficient personnel are available to protect schools, in line with the directives of the police inspector general.
