Police in Niger stop terror plot, seize explosive devices

Niger police successfully foiled a terror plot, seizing explosive devices in the process. Discover how this potential attack was prevented.

The Nigerian Police have achieved a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism, as they thwarted a major scheme in Niger State by discovering and unearthing an extensive collection of explosive devices consisting of bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) hoarded across different locations within the state.

Between 2021 and 2023, while collaborating with other security agencies, the Niger State Police Command made a discovery during their ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

A significant amount of explosive devices that were believed to have been hidden by terrorists and bandits has been unearthed as a result of the operations, according to Wasiu Abiodun, who spoke on behalf of the police.

On September 27, 2021, a cache was found in the Shiroro Local Government Area containing hazardous objects including four pipe-borne IEDs located underground at Galadima-Kogo.

On February 11, 2022, explosives were discovered at Mutun-Daya located in Shiroro LGA. Further investigation revealed that these materials had been concealed inside empty shells of suspected military missiles and a cooking gas cylinder weighing approximately 5kg.

In a more recent event, which occurred on October 24th of the year 2023, authorities discovered hidden explosives within a ten-liter container as well as three hand grenades believed to be from military sources and an improvised device in the shape of a bow. This discovery took place within Minna’s Gbeganu locality.

On August 22, 2024 a secure location was utilized behind Zuma Rock in Suleja for the triumphant elimination of hazardous materials.

The head of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit for the Command was SP Mohammed Mamun who led this operation.

Authorities are presently conducting an inquiry to track down the source of the explosive gadgets, aiming to detect and seize those responsible for hiding them.
