A couple who were trafficking a one-month-old baby they had purchased from Lagos for 30,000 naira were caught by Anambra Police Command.
The interception happened on December 17, 2023, at Bridgehead in Onitsha, according to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in Awka on Tuesday.

Ikenga claims, “The mother was not able to breastfeed the infant despite its cries for food during the trip. The pair was travelling with the baby in a luxury bus owned by a well-known transportation firm.
“The good samaritan called the Anambra Police Control Room hotline in Awka, and the police at Bridgehead in Onitsha received the information.”
In the evening, the Police waited for the affluent bus mentioned and stopped it.
After being identified, the infant and the couple were taken down to be questioned.
“They acknowledged paying N30,000 to purchase the infant from its mother in Ajah, Lagos.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, praised Police Operatives for their vigilance and dedication to duty, and thanked the public-spirited citizen for his humane care in providing the information that led to the child’s rescue.
“The couple should be turned over to the National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP) for additional inquiry and prosecution, per the CP’s directive.
The PPRO stated, “In the interim, the State Government has given the Baby to the Ministry of Women Affairs for care.”
