Two individuals have been detained in Abuja for criminal conspiracy, identity theft, and romance frauds, according to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre.

This was said in a statement released by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that by detaining the individuals, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, was advancing his directive to leave Nigerians a safer online environment.

The suspects, who are residents of Panasonic Estate in Idu, Abuja, according to Adejobi, have admitted to taking part in identity theft and computer-related fraud schemes.

Significant evidence from their electronic devices, according to the police spokesman, revealed their illicit activity.

One of the suspects, a former University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student, allegedly claimed to have worked in the music industry since 2016 and to also own a public relations firm.

According to Adejobi, the suspect confessed to engaging in fraudulent activity on Facebook starting in 2014.

The police official claimed that a thorough investigation had also turned up strong evidence connecting him to fraud and romance scams up to this point.

He added that the two suspects were close friends and that both of them had been taken into custody.

The second suspect, according to Adejobi, stated that his visit to the first suspect’s home was for the purpose of recording music.

He acknowledged, though, that he had a special relationship with Winnie, a 69-year-old Caucasian woman who he considers to be both a fan and a friend.

He claimed that the two had a relationship that went beyond simple friendship because of evidence that showed they had been exchanging money on a regular basis.
