Together with police officers from the Azikiwe Police Division, members of a local vigilante group in charge of Eagle Island in Port Harcourt City, Rivers State, have detained twelve suspected “yahoo boys” for allegedly burying a newborn baby on Wednesday.

The infant was purportedly interred by the con artists at Eagle Island’s waterfront.

Victor Ohaji, the Chief Security Officer of Eagle Island and the Chairman of Phalga Security Watch, claimed they had information that some “yahoo boys” were performing incantation near the waterfront.

Ohaji claimed that after immediately mobilising his troops, when they arrived at the waterfront, the youngsters had already departed.

The Vigilante leader claimed that after careful inspection of the area, they found that the youngsters had buried something at the waterfront.

Ohaji, Eagle Island’s Chief Security Officer, claimed that when they dug up the dirt, they found a newborn baby that had already passed away.

He claimed that they informed the Azikiwe Police Division’s Divisional Police Officer as well as the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch and the police station officer at Eagle Island.

Ohaji went on to say that they went in pursuit of the boys and caught them as they were leaving an Eagle Island hotel.

He acknowledged that the youngsters had been given to the police for a thorough investigation and prosecution.

One of my brothers informed me this morning that several yahoo boys were doing some incantation in the sandfield near the Eagle Island Waterfront.

So I phoned my boys right away, and we got to work. The boys were gone when we arrived at the crime scene.

“I asked my brother to show me where the boys were chanting the incantation. I could tell there was something buried there as soon as I viewed the location.

To find out what was buried there, we had to dig the area. When we began to dig, we discovered a newborn baby boy inside the dirt who was bouncing.

“As Eagle Island’s station officer, I immediately called the Eagle Island SO and informed him of our discovery.

“He responded, ‘Let him relate to the DPO,’ and we started searching Eagle Island right away to make sure we captured the boys.

“We travelled from hotel to hotel with the police and the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch. As we turned back, we noticed them leaving a motel.

“When they spotted us, they fled, but we caught them. To show them what we had found, we took them to the police station along with the dead baby.

“One of the yahoo guys’ leaders was yelling, stating that since his father is a Major General, nothing will happen and that his father is on the way.

“I want the Rivers State Government to help Phalga Security Watch. In this situation, we are actively working. Every day, we rent a car out, but nobody pays us.

“Plz let them come to our aid and help us so that we can get a vehicle that we can use to turn around the whole state to make sure we bring perpetrators of crime to book,” He furthered.

The suspects in the alleged fraud, who are accused of burying the newborn child, have been detained, according to the Rivers State Police Command.

The suspects have been given to the State Criminal examination Department for a thorough examination, said to the Command’s public relations officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko.

She continued by saying that if the suspects are proven to be guilty at the conclusion of the inquiry, they would be prosecuted in court to ensure that justice is served.
