The police spokesperson continued by saying that the command will not be dissuaded from carrying out its responsibility to uphold legal regulations.
The Lagos State Police Command has verified the death of a police inspector while enforcing an okada (commercial motorbike) ban at Cele Bus Stop.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, SP Ben Hundeyin, the state’s police public relations officer (PPRO), also mentioned that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) had suffered a significant injury.
He wrote, “Whilst enforcing the current restriction on the usage of motorbikes in portions of Lagos State, police officers of Isolo Division came under attack from motorcycle riders at Cele bus stop, resulting in the death of one police inspector and serious injuries to the divisional police officer (DPO).”
Police officers from Isolo Division were enforcing the state’s current motorcycle use limit when they were attacked by motorcycle riders at the Cele bus stop. One police inspector was killed and the divisional police officer (DPO) was seriously hurt.
Two individuals have reportedly been taken into custody, while 41 motorbikes have reportedly been seized, according to Hundeyin.
He further stated that the command will not be discouraged from doing its responsibility to uphold valid laws.
“Citizens are asked to uphold the law since both riders and passengers who are detained on forbidden routes will be prosecuted. Above all, any attack on a police officer will no longer be permitted, the police spokesperson declared.
With effect on June 1, 2022, the Lagos State Government imposed the okada ban in six local government areas (LGAs) of the state, namely Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.
Later, it expanded the restriction to include the states of Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Shomolu, and Mushin, starting on September 1, 2022.
