Police Arrest Man Suspected of Arms Peddling in Plateau State

A middle-aged man was reportedly caught by Plateau State Police Command agents trying to provide weapons to suspected bandits in Jos.

The suspect was caught trying to deliver the weapons to suspected bandits in front of NTA Park. He was also said to have travelled to Jos from Zamfara State on Wednesday night.

The Chairman of the Jos NTA Park, Ibrahim Maikwudi, confirmed the event to reporters in Jos on Thursday. He described how the suspect was almost lynched by a furious mob before security personnel saved him.

He clarified that the suspect was saved by the prompt arrival of security personnel, stating that the individual arrived on Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. and was standing in front of NTA Park at the intersection that leads to the state Secretariat.

He disclosed more, saying, “He was just pacing up and down, answering phones, telling them he was at the NTA Park, waiting for them to come for their delivery. Two individuals who were close by heard his calls and observed him therefore thought something was off.

According to Maikwudi, the two guys were unable to approach the suspect; but, when their people were called, the boys were able to approach him and ask him a few questions, to which he gave inconsistent responses.

He claimed that after apprehending him and seizing the bag he was carrying, even though the man had objected, they had discovered that the bag contained weapons and ammo.

He emphasised that the suspect apparently confessed that he was not the only one on the trip to Jos, stating there are many more. He claimed that at that point, people tried to beat him up, but they hurried to notify the police out of worry that the crowd may kill him there.

The park chairman described how he was arrested by men from the police’s Special Investigations Bureau Unit.

Alabo Alfred, the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, was unavailable for comment on the incident.
