Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives, has promised to question President Bola Tinubu on what he did with the trillions of naira that were saved when the fuel subsidy was removed.

The House Committee on Navy’s chair, a politician and prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that while he supported the elimination of the fuel subsidy, it would not stop him from holding the government responsible for how the funds were used.

While speaking with BBC Hausa “I am among many Nigerians who believe that fuel subsidies should be removed because I see them as a form of theft,” Gagdi stated. I vouch that the Nigerian poor are not benefiting from the subsidy.

“I’ve learnt a lot about gasoline subsidies in the House of Representatives committee that I lead. The Nigerian people are not the ones who are truly profiting from this subsidies, as far as I can see. A select few elites are making large personal wealth gains from the subsidy.

“Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu), on behalf of the Nigerian people, may one day be questioned about the savings from the removal of subsidies, even if I favour their removal. Since the Buhari administration, we have been signing for these savings, which have come to a total of 1, 6, and 10 trillion naira. With this funds, what tangible projects will the Nigerian people witness?

“I promise that we will hold the Nigerian government responsible for its deeds at some point. We’ll question them about what they did with these funds.

“The impoverished should benefit from newly constructed roads, schools, hospitals, and businesses if fuel subsidies are eliminated. Nigerians will benefit from jobs created by this, as they won’t need to depend on government assistance.
