The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming 2023 election, is at liberty to depart from the party if he desires to do so.
This statement was issued by NLC spokesperson Benson Upah on Sunday, reiterating the organization’s position on Julius Abure’s leadership and the controversial national convention that reinstated Abure as the Labour Party’s national chairman.
Despite the union’s refusal to acknowledge Abure’s leadership due to what they perceive as an ‘illegal’ convention, Upah emphasized that the NLC’s stance remains unchanged, emphasizing that Abure is unrecognized and essentially non-existent in their eyes.
In a related development, the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists, a group of retired workers, has called for the resignation of both Julius Abure and NLC President Joe Ajaero due to their ongoing leadership dispute.

Peter Obi’s disagreement with the Labour Party’s leadership regarding the Nnewi convention in Anambra State has been a point of contention, with Obi expressing his dissatisfaction over the lack of consultation with stakeholders prior to the event.
Despite being assured the 2027 ticket at the convention, speculations have arisen that Obi may be contemplating a switch to a different political platform, a decision that Upah clarified is entirely up to Obi to make, emphasizing that he has the freedom to determine his political future.
Upah described Obi as a valuable asset, stating that the NLC would not impede his departure from the party if he chooses to do so, affirming that Obi’s decision to stay or leave is entirely his own to make.
