According to Obi, Nigerians have a constitutional right to protest. He encouraged protesters to exhibit lawful and civil behavior that emphasizes Nigeria’s governance by law. With the current economic situation being harsh on citizens, it is important for leaders to take note of their grievances.
Obi stated that to address concerns regarding possible sponsors of the protests, it is important to acknowledge and tackle the real underlying causes – which are hunger and hopelessness experienced by young people.
His advice to security agencies was to handle the situation with caution, avoiding unnecessary use of force.
