Peter Obi Claims Hardship Under Tinubu’s Govt Is Worsening Mental Health Crisis in Nigeria

Peter Obi has criticized the Tinubu administration, asserting that the growing economic hardship is contributing to a rise in mental health issues among Nigerians.

Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) has stated that the deteriorating economic conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration are contributing to an increase in mental health issues, among other factors.

Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, expressed this in his message as Nigeria joined the international community on Thursday to observe World Mental Health Day.

In a post on his X account, the LP presidential candidate from the 2023 general election stated that mental health continues to be one of Nigeria’s critical health issues that does not receive the attention it deserves.

He expressed concern that cases of suicide in the country, driven by anxiety and depression, continued to increase.

In Nigeria, mental health continues to be one of the crucial health issues that does not receive the attention it warrants.

The deteriorating economic conditions caused by hunger, poverty, and income inequalities in the country, along with various socio-political challenges affecting the nation, have persistently contributed to a rising incidence of mental health issues.

“The National Institute of Health estimates that between 40 and 60 million Nigerians experience some form of mental illness,” stated Obi.
