Peter Obi urges transparency and accountability in the operations of the Port Harcourt Refinery as it commences production, highlighting its impact on Nigeria’s energy sector.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has urged Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited to uphold transparency and accountability in managing the newly launched Port Harcourt Refinery.

After being postponed multiple times, fuel production at the Port Harcourt refinery finally began on Tuesday.

The refinery is set to begin operations with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, distributing Premium Motor Spirit, diesel, and other products into the Nigerian market.

The spokesperson for the NNPC, Olufemi Soneye, announced that truck loading would commence on Tuesday.

“According to Soneye, the Port Harcourt Refinery has commenced production and truck loading is set to begin today, Tuesday.”

In a post on his X handle responding to Wednesday’s development, Obi praised the revival of the refinery as a positive step and commended NNPCL for reaching this milestone.

The statement expressed congratulations to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for fulfilling its long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt refinery. The newly operational facility has an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with roughly 200 trucks expected to load products daily from the site. Nigerians are now eagerly anticipating how this will affect pump prices and benefit the overall economy.

Furthermore, the announcement of the Kaduna refinery’s revival is encouraging because it is anticipated to enhance productivity, improve transportation, and ease economic challenges nationwide. Although we recognize these accomplishments as progress in a positive direction, it remains essential to highlight the significance of transparency in NNPC operations.

Nigerians have the right to clear information and accountability in how the nation’s crucial oil resources are managed. It’s essential that increased refining capacity benefits all citizens and contributes to sustainable, long-term development.
