Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming that the opposition party is intentionally inciting discord based on religion and ethnicity following a recent Court of Appeal ruling that upholds the governor’s election victory.

These worries were expressed by Mr. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, at a news conference yesterday in Lafia.

Ahemba claimed that the PDP organised a protest in the state capital in response to the recent court decision as part of an effort to undermine and intimidate the legal system.

Ahemba claims that during what he called a “stage-managed” rally, the “Coalition of Indigenous People of Nasarawa State,” which is allegedly supported by the PDP, referred to some state residents as “foreigners.”

Such speech, he claimed, was uncommon in a region where different tribes have historically coexisted peacefully, and it was intended to divide the state along ethnic lines.

According to Ahemba, the PDP has continuously followed a risky course from the electioneering activities that preceded the governorship election on March 18.

Security services reportedly warned the opposition party not to stir up trouble, but they continued their efforts to topple the government.

“The recent orchestrated demonstration against the Appeal Court ruling is a deliberate effort to undermine the brave, sensible, and resolute decision-making of the Appeal Court and intimidate the country’s legal system for deciding to consider the appeal that the Governor filed before it based on its merits rather than gut feelings,” the speaker claimed.

Ahemba further denounced the PDP, saying it was a desperate attempt to pursue an ethnic agenda, for asking the international world to get involved in the state’s internal affairs.

He warned that the opposition’s rhetoric may foment hatred among the populace and encouraged security authorities to pay attention to it.
