The Independent State Electoral Commission, or KWASIEC, has scheduled local council elections on September 21, 2024, and the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, has announced that it is prepared for them.

Following a general meeting of political parties involved in council polls with the state electoral commission on Saturday in the state capital of Ilorin, the largest opposition party in the state made this declaration through its spokesman, Olusegun Olushola Adewara.

Babatunde Mohammed, the state chairman, and Abdulrahman Abdullahi Kayode, the state party secretary, effectively represented the PDP.

He stated: “The PDP is happy to announce that our party is ready for the next elections. As a result, we have not asked that the election schedule that KWASIEC originally published be changed in any way.

“We are confident in our readiness to participate under the current schedule, and we remain committed to a transparent and timely electoral process.”

Regarding the nomination form fees, PDP stated that all potential candidates for the chairmanship and councilorship elections should be able to afford them, in line with recommendations made by other parties.

As a result, the PDP suggested that the nomination forms for chairmanship and councilorship should not exceed N200,000 and N50,000, respectively.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, fixed nomination forms for chairmanship and councilorship positions at N100,000 and N25,000, respectively. Obasanjonews.com learned this information despite attempts to contact APC spokesman Aro Folaranmi on Saturday being unsuccessful due to multiple calls to his phone going unanswered.

However, the forms will be provided free of charge to women and those with physical disabilities, and the party is planning to come to an agreement over the polls for local councils.

PDP emphasised that Okanla-led KWASIEC needs to go above and above to demonstrate that the commission will not be swayed by the ruling APC. The commission was encouraged to preserve its independence and guarantee a fair and transparent electoral process.

A PDP statement said, “Any actions that compromise this integrity must be addressed with the utmost seriousness. The integrity of our democratic processes is paramount.”
