Governors from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) call on President Tinubu to review current economic policies, citing concerns over rising hardships in Nigeria.

The Governors’ Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced concerns over the economic difficulties faced by the nation due to policies implemented by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government. They have urged President Bola Tinubu to reassess Nigeria’s macroeconomic and fiscal strategies.

Tinubu discontinued the fuel subsidy and allowed the naira to float, among other reforms, resulting in a rise in living costs.

The governors believe that adjusting the policies will improve the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.

This is one of the resolutions made by the forum during its meeting in Jos, Plateau State.

“The forum expressed empathy for Nigerians suffering under the severe economic hardships imposed by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government,” said Bala Mohammed, chairman of the group and Governor of Bauchi State, following their meeting.

The forum urges the president to promptly reassess macroeconomic and fiscal policies to enhance the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.

It emphasized that PDP governors will persistently implement policies and programs aimed at alleviating hardship and promoting progress and development within their states.

“The governor stated that the forum is committed to ensuring all PDP governors persistently implement policies and programs aimed at alleviating hardship and promoting progress and development.”

The recently concluded governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states caught the forum’s attention, being labeled as a violation of democratic principles. The forum urged the judiciary to remain resolute in handling election petition cases and called on the National Assembly to fortify electoral laws.

“The forum expresses deep concern over the undermining of democracy in the Edo governorship elections. It is evident to anyone with a conscience that INEC manipulated results to benefit the APC candidate, despite the fact that PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo actually secured the majority of lawful votes,” he stated.

In the meantime, we are continuing to review the documents related to the Ondo elections where it was observed that APC altered results following an open vote-buying incident.

The forum urges the judiciary to protect Nigerian democracy and encourages the National Assembly to review our electoral laws, making it harder for institutional sabotage of the people’s will.

On matters unrelated to national issues, the governors additionally urged that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party should convene a NEC meeting by early February 2025.

The PDP governors stated that this decision is intended to facilitate comprehensive consultations with the party’s key stakeholders in order to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the main opposition ruling party.

Governors from Bauchi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, Oyo, and the host state Plateau participated in the one-day meeting. Delta and Enugu states were represented by their deputy governors. Meanwhile, the governors of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Osun did not attend.
