PDP Governors, NWC Agree to Remove Acting Chairman Damagum
PDP governors and the National Working Committee (NWC) have agreed to remove acting national chairman, Damagum. Find out the reasons behind this decision.
The acting national chairman, Iliya Umar Damagum is set to be ousted from his position by governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in agreement with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
On Tuesday night, the PDP Governors’ Forum chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed announced their decision after a meeting with the NWC.
After Iyorchia Ayu was ousted in June 2023, Damagum took on the role of interim national chairman. This is significant because Damagum has a history as an ally to Nyesom Wike, who serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Nevertheless, Governor Mohammed emphasized that Damagum’s ongoing leadership is a violation of the constitution. He underlined that Ayu should be allowed to finish his term since he comes from North Central region.

Mohammed stated that his brother originating from the North East is presently fulfilling an unconstitutional role as Acting National Chairman.
As per the regulations outlined in our party’s constitution, any vacant leadership position must be filled by an individual hailing from the respective region where it first emerged.
“North Central has been enthusiastic about this chance, as we have had several discussions on the matter. Our devotion is to work with both NWC and party to ensure that North Central gets an opportunity to take up this responsibility,” he affirmed.
According to Governor Mohammed, the North East had previously experienced a comparable situation when former governor Ahmadu Muazu became PDP national chairman subsequent to Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s resignation.
