The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has come under fire from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for attacking the Aba Diocese leadership of the Anglican Church. The PDP has called the attack inappropriate and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Monday, Hon. Abraham Amah, the vice chairman of the PDP in Abia and acting state chairman, expressed unhappiness with the Otti administration’s response to the recommendations made by the Synod of the Anglican Church of Aba Diocese in a communique it issued following its 17th Synod.
The administration had received advice from the church to repair the economic highways in Aba and refrain from dismissing employees of the State civil service.
He claimed that instead of acting on the advise in good faith and making amends, Otti engaged in his customary blatant display of intolerance by introducing a diametrically opposed political viewpoint into the story.
The Governor, according to the PDP, stated that one of the communique’s signatories had asked him to exempt her daughter from the widespread sacking of Abia civil officials he began as soon as he took office.
Otti, according to Amah, also claimed that the same signatory had asked him to support the installation of a particular traditional ruler as the chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council and to endorse and confirm a factional Chairman of NULGE against the wishes of the majority of the union’s executive members.
“In all the bizarreness of the response, what is most offensive to the members of the 17th Synod of the Anglican Church of Aba Diocese, the entire Anglican Communion, and actually to Christendom is for Alex Otti to say that out of the many Bishops who attended the Synod and signed the communique only one man, standing behind his personal interest, dictated the letters of the communique and convinced others to sign a communique whose content is offensive,'” he said
“Is it difficult for anyone to know that more than 10,000 civil servants have been fired in Abia State or that the important roads that need attention to boost economic activity in Aba, particularly Port Harcourt, Ohanku, Obohia and other roads in Aba and its surroundings, have not been given attention?”
The PDP questioned why Otti would accuse the previous administration of not conducting government business according to established processes when he is more directly responsible for the infraction.
The main opposition party emphasised that Otti had broken numerous laws in Abia State since taking office and had disregarded all of the current public service regulations, among many other things.
