Leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and past member of the Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, asserts that the party does not require a merger in order to be eligible for the general elections in 2027.

Pearse ruled out the notion of the PDP merging with any other political parties in an interview he gave on Friday in Lagos to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He stated that the PDP is still alive and well and that all it needed to do to win elections was to unite and build its house.

“PDP can’t be escaping. Forget about the merger. Are you referring to a PDP merger with some of these non-office holding political parties?

“It is imperative that we examine ourselves, realign our priorities, and enhance the party.”

“If we do the right thing, PDP is not over. If we take the proper action, President Tinubu would step down in 2027, he declared.

Pearse asserts that PDP cannot combine with any party, saying instead that it must stand alone and develop its current foundation. We can defeat anyone if we continue to develop what we have.

“Right now, we have 13 governors, or 40% of the National Assembly. What and with whom do we need to merge? What benefits may a merger offer PDP?

Regarding the results of the 2023 presidential contest, Pearse stated that President Bola Tinubu prevailed because PDP candidate Alhaji Abubakar Atiku was unable to make amends with former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike and other others.

Atiku was the one who didn’t perform his duties. He neglected to take the necessary action. Even if he didn’t intend to use Wike as his vice, he might have pledged to make him minister of petroleum and avoided the fight.

“Wike will carry out the necessary effort and distribute funds to prosecute the election and guarantee the party’s win. “It wasn’t him,” he said.

Prior to the general election of 2027, NAN reports that a few politicians and pundits have been pushing for a union of opposition political groups.
