PDP Criticizes Tinubu’s Media Chat, Claims Indifference to Economic Hardship
The PDP has accused President Tinubu of showing disregard for Nigerians’ economic struggles during his media chat, calling for more empathetic and impactful governance.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claims that President Bola Tinubu’s remarks during his media chat on Monday exposed a lack of concern for the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
The party spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, announced this in a statement on Tuesday while responding to the President’s initial media chat.
Ologunagba expressed that the president’s lack of regret over removing the petrol subsidy demonstrates insensitivity to the widespread suffering and hardship faced by citizens.
In a previous media chat, the president mentioned that he has no regrets about eliminating the petrol subsidy, as reported by DAILY POST.
In response, Ologunagba stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assertion of having no regrets over the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies—without implementing measures to ease its devastating impact on the productive sector and skyrocketing cost of living—is indicative of APC’s disconnect from government’s primary role in ensuring citizen welfare and security. This has led to severe poverty and premature deaths among citizens.”
It is telling that President Tinubu acknowledged in the conversation that Nigerians are suffering due to the APC administration’s failure, under his leadership, to effectively monitor and secure our nation’s borders, thereby preventing petroleum products from being smuggled into neighboring countries.
The PDP is concerned that the APC has not explained how it used the funds saved from removing subsidies, while Nigerians face severe economic difficulties due to the APC administration’s failure in safeguarding our nation’s territorial integrity.
The PDP Spokesman stated that rather than acknowledging shortcomings and looking for solutions, Tinubu asserted that the nation’s economy has improved during his tenure.
Ologunagba further mentioned that the economy has deteriorated, characterized by an inactive productive sector, a declining value of the naira, and skyrocketing inflation reaching 34.6 percent.
He stated that the stampedes occurring during palliative distributions indicate that the nation is truly facing perilous times under the APC.
He expressed that the PDP believes there is no hope on the horizon with APC, due to its inability to make significant investments in essential sectors like agriculture and food production, electricity, petroleum and gas, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises—key drivers of the national economy.
Ologunagba stated that Tinubu’s claim about Nigerians being able to travel safely by road, despite the ongoing kidnappings on highways, is untrue.
The PDP spokesperson urged the president to drive from Abuja to Lagos, explore local markets, and interact with people on the streets. This would allow him to truly understand and appreciate the country’s actual situation instead of depending on potentially misleading statistics provided by his government officials.
