The Deputy Governor of the State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, received harsh criticism from PDP leaders in Edo State on Sunday for going before the court to address an impeachment charge.
Shaibu had applied for a restraining order against his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, before the Federal High Court in Abuja, claiming that Obaseki was preparing to have him removed from office.
PDP leaders from the Edo Central Senatorial District criticised Shaibu at a meeting on Sunday in Igueben, Igueben Local Government Area, for not looking into the party’s internal dispute resolution methods.
Tony Aziegbemi, the party’s chairman in Edo, Clifford Odia, a former senator from Edo Central, and Chief Tom Ikimi, a former chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT), among others, were among those who attended the meeting, according to NAN.
The PDP leaders said in a statement following the meeting that Obaseki had received a vote of confidence over the situation.
“During the meeting, Chief Francis Ulinfun moved and Elder Johnny Abhulimen seconded a motion to express implicit confidence in the governor of the state of Edo, His Excellency, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki.
“However, the deteriorating relationship between our Governor, His Excellency Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Rt Hon Philip Shaibu, was noted with utmost dismay,” the statement partially stated.
The PDP officials added that the controversy wasn’t required given that the main concern was to the 2024 governorship election.
“We therefore urge the deputy governor to withdraw his suit forthwith and seek a political solution to the problem with his principal,” they wrote in their submission.
