PDP Crisis: Makinde Says Atiku’s Success in Oyo Is Dependent on Ours

A former minister of power and steel named Wole Oyelese attacked the governor by saying that the G5 member needed Atiku to win.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State claims that Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, is using his government’s accomplishments to win the state in the upcoming election.

Makinde, who appeared live on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, was addressing complaints made by Wole Oyelese, a former minister of power and steel.

Oyelese attacked the governor, calling his decision not to campaign for Atiku a betrayal and claiming that Makinde depends on Atiku’s victory.

The Oyo governor, however, retaliated against his relative by asserting that the opposite was true.

I won’t treat Elder Oyelese disrespectfully because he is older than me. But I believe that he essentially turned logic on its head. “The situation is reversed,” he remarked.

“I will have to campaign for our candidate if he has to win in Oyo State because the PDP in that state depends on the progress we’ve been able to make over the past three and a half years.

Therefore, if he’s searching for a ministerial job, I doubt anyone will provide it to him because the last time he had the chance, he performed appallingly.

In reference to Oyelese’s purported lack of popularity, Makinde claimed that the locals in his birthplace of Erunmu “wouldn’t even touch him with a long stick.”

“So, you have all of these so-called expired politicians, and then they go out there and say, “We’ve done this,” he said, urging the former minister to remain objective. We’re up to the task.

“I appreciate the opposition; I respect some of the difficulties we will encounter during this election.” We are realists, though. We are rational and data-driven. We have already shown it.

Unity in Nigeria is at stake.

The governor of Oyo State stated that the demands of the G5, or Integrity Group—five disgruntled PDP governors who are protesting the “unjust” party leadership—went beyond personal aspirations and were about safeguarding national interests.

“The stability of our nation is in jeopardy, if I am to tell you exactly what is happening.” When they said it, they said it in a circular motion.Allow for inclusion. We say, “Get zone party posts and rotate them,” since we are aware that our federalism has not been firmly established.

So, we said, “Rotate the roles, do zoning,” to make up for some of the things that we currently lack constitutionally. “We’ve ignored that now,” he said.

Makinde contends that party members cannot continue to pick and choose which provisions of the constitution they will uphold and ignore.

The National Chairman himself was the one who said that if a candidate from the north of the country were to win the election, he might be forced to retire.

“However, you now assert that the Constitution must be adhered to. This is the constitution that we blatantly ignored in the beginning.

The governor called to inquire about the PDP’s State Working Committee in Ekiti State’s recent dissolution.

“They argued that it was premature to start pushing the national chairman to step down about six months ago.

“However, they disbanded the entire exco in Ekiti State not too long ago. So, dissolution won’t occur too soon before a vote? He queried.

Respect for APC Governors

Makinde did not hold back in praising his opponents of northern ancestry who showed support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate’s selection as a southerner.

“I must commend the governors running on the APC platform, including Governors Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Mai Bala Buni of Yobe, Mohammed Abubakar of Jigawa, and Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna.

They banded together within their party and declared, “Let us sacrifice our ambition for the unity of this country.” Let the South take turns holding the President. So, we must commend them.

“However, what transpired within our own party?” Our constitution can go to blazes; we were shouting as we struggled against ourselves. “That isn’t right, in my opinion,” he declared.

The governor believes that the values he and the other G5 members are upholding will be remembered in history.

The Integrity Governors aren’t doing this to say, “We’re trying to prove that we’re right or wrong.”

“We’re standing on a principle, and if you stand on a principle, may you be left for posterity because all of this will pass away, whether you’re right or you’re wrong.

“The election will be decided in another four weeks, and then we’ll have to face the verdict of history,”
