In a crucial away match against Villarreal Femenino, Nigerian winger Tony Payne played a pivotal role in helping Sevilla Femenino keep their Champions League qualification dream alive in the Spanish Women’s Premier League.
The game started off cautiously, with both teams focusing on their defensive strategies. Sevilla had an early chance through Eva Llamas, but unfortunately, her header from a set-piece by Amanda Sampedro missed the target.
Despite dominating possession and creating more opportunities, Sevilla struggled to break through Villarreal’s strong defense and the exceptional goalkeeping skills of Carmen Carbonell in the first half.
After the halftime break, Villarreal took the lead with a well-executed header by Kayla McKenna, assisted by Francisca Lara.

However, Sevilla quickly responded just two minutes later. Tony Payne, who had a relatively quiet first half, showcased her brilliance with a moment of magic. Her exquisite cross found Inma Gabarro, who skillfully slotted the ball into the net with her right foot.
Payne continued to trouble Villarreal’s defenders and came close to doubling Sevilla’s lead in the 56th minute. Her left-footed strike, following a clever pass from Sampedro, was brilliantly saved by Carmen once again. The game remained tense as both teams searched for a winning goal.
In the 73rd minute, a controversial penalty decision favored Sevilla and turned the tide of the match. Ainoa Campo’s handball in the box resulted in a spot-kick, which Rosa Otermín calmly converted. Sevilla held on to this vital victory, keeping their hopes of European qualification alive.
Looking ahead, Sevilla Femenino will now focus on their upcoming match against relegation-threatened Eibar in Matchday 25 of the Spanish Women’s Premier League.
With the momentum gained from this victory, they will aim to continue their push for a coveted Champions League spot.
