In an apparent attempt at murder, a well-known Ugandan preacher and vocal ally of President Yoweri Museveni was shot.

Police reported on Wednesday that the pastor was hospitalised following a gunshot incident that claimed the life of his security.

According to Ugandan police, Channels reported that Aloysius Bugingo was wounded on Tuesday night when “unidentified assailants opened fire on (his) vehicle before swiftly escaping the scene on a motorbike.”

“The attempted murder of Pastor Aloysius Bugingo and the unfortunate killing of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard,” they added, were the subject of an investigation.

Museveni’s son Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is viewed as the president’s possible heir, said he had spoken with Bugingo, “our strong supporter,” and that “he is well.”

He wrote on the now-defunct Twitter platform X, “He got slightly wounded in his left shoulder,” labelling the incident as “heinous.”

As the leader of the House of Prayer Ministries, one of the most significant Pentecostal churches in the pious East African nation, Bugingo is a controversial figure in Uganda.

In addition, he controls his own radio and television networks, which he uses to promote Museveni—who has controlled Uganda since 1986—unconditionally.

Police said, “Pastor Aloysius Bugingo managed to transport the vehicle to Mulago Hospital despite sustaining injuries during the attack.”

“Unfortunately, Muhumuza Richard, his bodyguard, lost his life in the attack and was pronounced deceased when he reached the hospital.”

Bugingo was “undergoing medical treatment and is under close monitoring,” according to their statement.
