Rena Wakama has been honored with the Best Women’s Basketball Coach Award at the Paris 2024 Olympics, recognizing her outstanding leadership and contribution to the sport.
Rena Wakama, nicknamed ‘D’Tigress’, has been awarded the title of best coach in women’s basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Since its establishment in 1966, Wakama is the first coach of Nigeria’s National Female Basketball Team to win the women’s Afrobasket title.
For the first time in its history, she led the Nigerian female team to reach quarter-finals of the tournament.
Their achievement marked the initial appearance of an African team (male or female) at that level of competition.
In the end, Nigeria was defeated by the US with a score of 74-88 in the women’s basketball tournament and had to exit.
On Sunday evening, a tweet on the International Basketball Federation’s X handle praised Rene Wakama of Nigeria as the top coach for women’s basketball at #Paris2024.
In addition, Ezinne Kalu, the point guard of D’Tigress and an All-Second Team member in Olympics Women’s Basketball, joined 32-year-old Wakama.
She made history in 2023 as the inaugural female Head Coach of D’Tigress. Prior to this achievement, she held roles such as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations and Assistant Coach where she continued to cultivate talent while overseeing academic affairs and community outreach efforts for the team.
