The federal and state governments have been urged to create bicycle lanes on roadways so that pupils who own bicycles can ride to school and other locations safely, according to some parents in the Federal Capital Territory neighbourhood of Kubwa.
They announced it at Abuja’s second annual 10-kilometer cycling race for youngsters.
Apexdotcom and Dynamic Women on Point collaborated to organise the competition, which was dubbed “Bikers Race: Cycling is Fun”.
The tournament would inspire kids to drive themselves to school or run errands, according to Mrs. Marian Oluwapidan, a parent and one of the competition’s organisers.
She clarified that the pupils’ mental talents, stamina, and confidence will all improve as a result of the competition.
“With the withdrawal of fuel subsidies, students won’t need a school bus; instead, they can ride their bicycles to school.
“They can leave their bicycles at school when they arrive, and after class is over, they collect them and ride back home.
The stress of attempting to pay for a school bus or commercial motorcycles will be lessened as a result, she added. However, if they have a suitable bicycle, they can ride to school.
Another parent and one of the organisers, Mrs. Gloria Eloho-Uduokhia, noted that the goal of the programme was to improve the pupils’ well-being and physical fitness.
“Given that fuel prices are on the high side, the country’s economic predicament is something else.
“We created this competition to encourage pupils to ride bikes to school.
By doing this, we are also urging the government to designate lanes on the highways so that students can bicycle securely, the woman stated.
The competition’s overall winner, Master Dominion Caleb, expressed gratitude to the group for coming up with the idea.
It was a positive experience, and he expressed gratitude to God for placing him first.
The winners and runners-up in each category received awards at the conclusion of the tournament.(NAN)
