After an attack on Nigerian Army troops in the town of Iree, Osun State’s Boripe Local Government Area residents fear reprisals.

The Poly Junction neighbourhood of Iree saw thugs beat and wound a soldier on Tuesday.

As of the publication of this article, the soldier’s identity was unknown.

We also don’t know what sparked the argument that resulted in the soldier being attacked because he was wearing camouflage clothing from the Nigerian Army.

For fear of being attacked by the thugs, onlookers who witnessed the fight were unable to step in and break it up.

The event occurred today, according to a Poly Junction trader who talked on the record. I observed them hitting the soldier, but I’m not sure what transpired between the thugs and the soldier.

We went so far as to implore the thugs to stop around him. A guy named Gbedu was in charge of the thugs. Around town, he’s known as a notorious thug. He shattered his head and they thrashed the soldier. His blood was all on him when they left.

The wounded soldier was taken away by some soldiers who had arrived on the scene, he said.

Nonetheless, the event has made a lot of people in the community anxious about military retaliation.

Because of this, people—including polytechnic students—remained indoors, and stores were seen to be shuttered.

The event has been confirmed by Kehinde Adeleke, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Osun Command. According to him, “A few miscreants in Iree attacked some Nigerian Army personnel who were on a mission to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and wounded some of them.” It remained unclear what exactly preceded the incident.
