The death of a 13-year-old girl in a building collapse at Igede, Ekiti, the headquarters of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, has saddened Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State.
The governor called on residents of run-down buildings throughout the state to relocate in order to protect their lives, describing the situation as sad and agonising.
During his Tuesday visit to the scene of the building fall, Oyebanji made a speech.
The governor also went to the Adeyinka Adebayo General Hospital, where some of the casualties are being treated, in the company of his deputy, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye.
Oyebanji stated that the government will pay the victims’ medical expenses in response to the tragedy. He also gave the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) instructions to make arrangements for the family members impacted by the building collapse to move into another livable dwelling.
According to Oyebanji, the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning will start enforcing legislation that would require people living in dangerously uninhabitable buildings around the state to leave in order to prevent such an incident from happening in the future.
Oyebanji stated that the government currently has regulations governing the occupation of buildings and promised that the laws would be strictly enforced going forward.
