The Police Command said in a statement released on Thursday by its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, that the arrests were made in response to public complaints and reports.

Following public reports and concerns via social media platforms like X, Instagram, and petitions, she stated, “There is a growing crime of kidnapping and coercive extortion of individuals by hoodlums who are now known as’mini kidnappers.'”

“The incident occurred on June 5, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Two young men were stopped by a group of four people riding bikes along Olaiya towards the Osun mall area. They were then forcibly robbed of their phone (an iPhone 13) using a cutlass. The group then took the victims to a point-of-sale operator where they continued to rob them of N400,000.”

“After receiving a tip, the Anti-Cultism Squad team moved quickly to detain the two suspects, leaving the other two gang members free.”

Opalola stated that the investigation is still underway but that all efforts are being made to apprehend the other gang members who are on the run.

She also decided that after the inquiry is over, the case will be brought before the court.

She urged the people of the state to be patient as the Command sets up systems to purge the state of illicit activity and criminals.

“This is to allow this state to continue and hold its ranking as one of the most tranquil states in the country.”
