Some streets and shops in the Osun State capital, Osogbo, were abandoned as the proposed nationwide warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, began today.
OBASANJO NEWS24 noticed that residents were confined indoors and that business owners had not yet opened for the day.
On the other hand, traders and commercial carriers were seen going about their regular business at the Owode-Ede market on the outskirts of Osogbo.
Korope, or commercial minibuses, were going about taking commuters to their destinations.
The state employees weren’t sure if they would report to work at the time of this report.
A civil servant named Bolanle Bamitale told OBASANJO NEWS24 that she had her doubts about the strike.
She stated that the state’s organised labour had remained silent about the issue.
“I’m still in my house. I’m not sure if I should leave or stay inside. I’ve called a few of my coworkers, and they have all expressed doubt about a strike,” she said.
Tope Abdulgafar, a trader, asserted that she would open her store despite not being employed.
“Now I’ll open my store. I have no business being involved in the strike. I don’t do any labour. I have to open my business every day if I want to survive,” she remarked.
The main gate of the Osun State Government Secretariat, Abere, was open, as well, according to OBASANJO NEWS24.
Civil servants in the state are not participating in the strike, according to Adekola Adebowale, chairman of the Association of Civil Servants of Nigeria’s Osun chapter.
There is no strike, he claimed. There isn’t a strike that we can see. I am here at the Osun State Secretariat in Abere as we speak.
“Every office is open. Everything is operating, and people are here working.
Adebowale responded to the news that the majority of civil servants failed to show up for work by claiming there was a lack of information that led to the misunderstanding.
“The information wasn’t distributed sufficiently. I can tell you that the space will be filled once more in a few hours.
After the National Union Of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, released a statement announcing that all banks would be closed on Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6, 2023, commercial banks in Osogbo continued to be closed for business.
The union claims that in order to express its disapproval of the effects of the removal of gasoline subsidies in the nation, it would join the NLC.
