In Osun, angry youths set ablaze the Iree monarch’s palace

A group of irate youths from the town vandalized and set fire to the Palace of Aree of Iree on Thursday night in Boripe North Local Council Development Area of Osun.

According to reports, young people who were upset about Chief Soliu Atoyebi, the Aogun of Iree, being detained by security personnel on Thursday morning, set fire to the palace.

Around 7:00 p.m., when the traditional monarch, Oba Ponle Ademola, was rumored to be leaving the palace, it was stormed and set on fire.

Major access roads to the town were blocked as a result of the event, and the young people who were angry set fire to the roadways.

According to reports, local residents and business owners promptly locked up their establishments for security.

SP Yemisi Opalola, the spokeswoman for the Osun Police, was not available for comment since her phone was off.

A day after his inauguration, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke signed an Executive Order putting aside the appointment and enthronement of three traditional rulers: Aare of Iree, Akirun of Ikirun, and Owa of Igbajo, NAN recounted.

Adeleke also ordered the three traditional rulers’ palaces to be secured and guarded by security personnel in order to prevent the collapse of law and order.

Following the selection of Prince Ponle Ademola as the Aree of Iree by the previous Gboyega Oyetola government, there was a tangible sense of anxiety throughout Iree Town.

Some of the town’s leading houses and organizations had objected to the choice of Ademola, claiming that Oyetola government officials had forced him onto the populace.
