Osun: 401 Council Caretaker Committee Members Resign

In Osun, 401 council caretaker committee members resign. Explore the reasons behind this mass resignation and its implications. 

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling prohibiting the utilization of caretaker committees for council administration, a total of 401 committee members in Osun State have stepped down from their positions.

A total of 69 caretaker chairmen and 332 ward members from different parts of the state have resigned en masse.

According to Sarafadeen Awotunde, the previous leader of Osun State’s Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), they resigned from their positions as per the Supreme Court ruling that deemed them unlawful.

On July 17, 2024, Adewale Adeyinka resigned from his position as the Chairman of Odo-Otin Local Government’s Caretaker Committee. In a letter addressed to Governor Ademola Adeleke and copied to the Osun State House of Assembly, he emphasized his dedication towards democratic ideals.

Adeyinka penned a resignation letter titled “Resignation from Position of Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Odi-Otin Local Government Area.”

My sincere wishes for your well-being as you read this letter. With a deep sense of responsibility and reverence towards our democratic ideals, I hereby submit my resignation from the role of Chairman in the Caretaker Committee overseeing Odo-Otin Local Government, effective instantly.

As I continue to seek additional opportunities to assist my community, rest assured that our progress will not come to a halt. My dedication remains steadfast in aiding the advancement and flourishing of Odo-Otin Local Government utilizing any means available.

I take pride in the progress we have achieved as a team, and serving has been an honor. Thank you for your unwavering support and understanding.

The relinquishments signify a substantial change in the management of Osun State as it conforms to the directive given by the Supreme Court to maintain democratic procedures in local government governance.
