Victor Osimhen, a striker for Napoli, has been named the 2022–23 Serie A’s Best Striker.
The Serie A announced on Friday that the striker bested Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and Rafael Leao of AC Milan to win the award.
The Nigerian won the award after scoring 25 goals in the league this season, four more than his closest competitor, Martinez, with just one game remaining.
The forward for the Super Eagles emerged as the best striker after guiding Napoli to its first Serie A championship since the 1988–1989 season. This was the club’s third domestic championship, its first having been won in 1987.
The 24-year-old player is on the verge of becoming the first African to lead Serie A in scoring.
When he scored his 47th goal in Serie A, he broke George Weah’s record for most goals scored by an African in Serie A.
However, Osimhen was not the only Napoli player to garner attention on Friday.
His strike partner Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was dubbed the Serie A Player of the Season.
This league season, the Georgian tallied 12 goals and dished out 10 assists. In 42 games this season, he scored 14 goals and dished out 10 assists.
Ivan Provedel of Lazio won the award for best goalkeeper, while Kim Min-Jae of Napoli was named the best defender.
Nicolo Barrela of Inter Milan was named the top midfielder.
