Edo Deputy Governor discloses that Adams Oshiomhole opposed the nomination of his son for a commissioner role, sparking political discussions.

Dennis Idahosa, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, disclosed that Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor of the state, was against nominating his son Cyril for Commissioner-designate for Health.

According to a statement by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, it was reported that Governor Monday Okpebholo appointed Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as the Commissioner for Health-designate last Tuesday.

During an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa referred to Cyril as an experienced medical doctor who is well-equipped to serve in the cabinet.

He expressed that Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a member of the Nigerian Senate, and his son has an independent path like anyone else. Cyril, who is well-versed in medicine, completed his medical education in Nigeria before pursuing advanced studies in the United States. He possesses full qualifications for a cabinet role. Being Oshiomhole’s son does not preclude him from holding positions he is capable of handling effectively. Therefore, he will assume the role of Commissioner for Health based on merit.

Idahosa denied the allegations of nepotism and state capture, stating that the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress was against his son’s nomination.

Idahosa clarified that Adams Oshiomhole has no connection to this position. In reality, Adams was against it because he disagreed with the governor’s vision for Edo State. The governor chose Cyril for his competence, independent of any relation to his father.

In response to comparisons with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments on state capture, Idahosa stated, “The situation in Edo State is a far cry from state capture. It focuses on promoting competence and achieving results for the benefit of the people.”

Regarding his role as deputy governor, Idahosa stated, “The governor and I discuss cabinet-related issues together. However, my primary official responsibility as deputy governor is to oversee the boundary commission as its chairperson.”
