President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should enlist the help of traditional leaders to address issues of insecurity, according to Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife.
He made the statement during a courtesy visit by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) to the President at the State House Conference Center in Abuja.
Ooni, who is also the co-chair of Nigeria’s traditional rulers, said, “There are some areas we’d like to collaborate with you on, one of which is security. We’re not suggesting we are inactive, but it’s time to use us more so that your task is easier.
The historic rulers form the cornerstone of this nation today. We are here to express our allegiance and support. To make sure you leave a legacy, we want to work with you.
Don’t undervalue the power of traditional rulers, he advised.
Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, earlier stated that the visit is a customary practice by the monarchs anytime there is a change in the nation’s political structure.
When you reach out to us, we will be here, he added, adding that the monarchs are people from many professions, including the military, the judiciary, and merchants, who have what it takes to contribute to the advancement of society.
The Sultan claimed that due to the many issues facing the nation, the monarchs do not envy President Tinubu at the moment, but he expressed confidence that he and Vice President Kashim Shettima will succeed when working together.
We give God praise for how well the elections went, he said. Many pessimistic people believed that this country would disintegrate, but we are still in existence.
“We are here for you, our nation, and our people. We will get in touch with you if you don’t if we don’t get in touch with you first.
“We wish you the most prosperous tenure in good health.”
George Akume, the secretary to the government of the federation, is also present.
The occasion was attended by traditional leaders from the six geopolitical zones of the nation.
