Onyeka Onwenu has been laid to rest in Lagos. The celebrated Nigerian singer and actress is remembered fondly as the community and fans mourn her loss.
In Lagos State, the Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu has been peacefully laid to rest.
On Friday, the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju area of Lagos hosted a funeral ceremony for the late musician, famously known as the “Elegant Stallion.”
A private burial took place at a vault in Ikoyi after the funeral service.
Following an impressive display at Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration in Lagos on July 30, Onwenu experienced a decline.
She was quickly taken to the Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she eventually passed away.
The funeral service was graced by the presence of Governor Alex Otti from Abia State, alongside Peter Obi who served as a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party and other esteemed guests.
Peter Obi praised the late Onwenu as a valuable asset to Nigeria who strongly advocated for national unity and progress during his eulogy at the burial.
Onyeka Onwenu, who remained a beloved national icon until her passing, held steadfast to the vision of a united and flourishing Nigeria. During her final stage performance before the tragic events that unfolded that fateful day, she sang an iconic tune called “One Love Keep Us Together”, thereby leaving behind tangible proof of her unwavering beliefs during her time on earth.

Obi expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the children, family members, friends and loved ones of the deceased. He acknowledged that this is a testing time for all concerned and hoped that each one will find courage in coping with their loss. Obi prayed for her eternal comfort from God’s hand and blessings upon her family now & always – as stated on his X handle post.
Born in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria in 1952, Onyeka Onwenu launched her musical journey during the 1980s. Her first album titled “For the Love of You” was released successfully in 1981 and paved way for multiple other releases such as the popular track “One Love”.
In addition to featuring in various Nollywood movies, Onwenu’s remarkable contributions to music and film have earned her multiple accolades. She is acknowledged as a trailblazer of Nigerian music scene.
Apart from her work in the entertainment industry, Onwenu has also made contributions to politics. She was selected as head of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture back in 2013 before going on to serve as Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
In 2011, Onwenu was bestowed with the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) as acknowledgement for her contributions to Nigerian society.
