Gbenga Edoema, a candidate in the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary on April 20 in Ondo State, has chosen to run for governor on the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform.
Edoema, a former chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, or OSOPADEC, was approved during the party’s substitute governorship primary in Akure, the state capital, and went on to become the NNPP candidate.
After receiving 100 votes to defeat Prof. Ibrahim Ajagunna in the party’s primary on April 26, Oluwatosin Ayeni, the party’s previous nominee for governor, withdrew from the campaign a few weeks later.
Edoema, who served as the state’s representative on the Niger Delta Development Commission’s (NDDC) board of directors, claimed that the absence of internal democracy inside the APC was the cause of her decision to leave the party.

He saw that the NNPP had a strong internal democracy.
“After carefully examining the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) manifesto, which was expertly assembled by some very bright minds, I have discovered that a significant portion of it is in line with our vision as expressed in the Igbega Ondo manifesto,” he declared.
Like its sister party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), from which it seized power, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is about to perish.
“I hereby formally announce my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective immediately,” the statement reads.
I now declare my support for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a genuinely progressive and people-centered organisation. This is a celebration to be enjoyed in the near future.
Therefore, we are using this platform to give Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa and his APC allies notice that the Government House in Alagbaka will no longer be accessible for their use as of February 24, 2025.
“As outlined in our manifesto, which will be made available in due course, we are offering the good people of Ondo State a more genuine and people-oriented government with the NNPP.”
