Daring armed robbers launched attacks on the Calabar-Ikom highway once more, killing one person and stealing money in the process.
This roadway, particularly the Uyanga axis in Akamkpa LGA, Cross River State, has a bad reputation for kidnappings and violent robberies.
Between last month and the present, no fewer than 15 people have been kidnapped.
According to reports, the military established a presence in the axis after the State Governor appealed to the Federal Government.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed robbers fired shots into moving automobiles with heavy weapons, striking two people.
A popular assault video showed a black vehicle covered with gunshot holes.
Mr. Iwara Iwara, a journalist and on-air personality on HIT 95.9 FM in Calabar, commented on the rise in attacks on the only access road from Calabar to the northern part of the state. He said there have been blatant armed robbery attacks on that brief stretch of the highway between the Adim and Abini communities.
He claimed that the frequency of the attacks is at an all-time high right now.
“At this location, robberies occur every week.
“Commuters, particularly market women, have tragic tales to relate as they make their way to the early morning markets in Calabar and Okom-Ita in the Akamkpa LGA. Some of the women have been sexually assaulted, and while they have frequently been robbed of significant amounts of company money, relief does not appear to be in the cards, he added.
The clan leader of the Akpet Nation, HRH Sunday Evong, sounded the alarm over the weekend over a large number of odd individuals and armed thugs who were allegedly recruited by illegal miners to harass villagers in the jungles around their community.
They have been linked to many crimes and kidnappings, he told media over the weekend.
The State Police PRO, SP Irene Ugbo, stated that the attacks are being looked into by her officers.
