On February 3, Ukraine and the European Union will meet in Kyiv to discuss financial and military assistance, according to a statement from President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office.

In his first phone call of the year, Zelensky spoke with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, about the specifics of the high-level meeting, according to the statement.

The next Ukraine-EU summit will take place on February 3 in Kyiv, and the sides “discussed expected results and agreed to intensify preparation work,” according to the statement.

According to the report, the leaders discussed providing Ukraine with “suitable” armaments and a new financial support programme worth 18 billion euros ($19 billion), with Zelensky pushing for the first tranche to be provided this month.

The EU paved the way for Ukraine‘s assistance with a supposedly “megadeal” last month that included the adoption of a minimum 15% worldwide corporate tax rate.

After Zelensky strongly asked the 27-nation bloc not to let their own problems stop them from helping Kiev, the action was taken.
